November/December Holidays Fun Pack 2015 - Yong E-Shean

The Keep-Me-Busy Book
I sit at my desk
Open my book
The book with its dog-eared edges
And yellowish-stained pages
I stare at it with anticipation
As I envision the next action
The character will take
I dive right in without a pause
With 365 pages, this book is sure to keep me busy

For the rest of the December holiday

The Wild Woods - Yong E-Shean

The running track lay before John like a huge Black Hole, except that it was red in colour.  The eerie moonlight shining down on the track made it all the more menacing, sending shivers down John’s spine.  He placed his valuables on one of those cute little plastic chairs meant for spectators, and headed down to the track to start his daily jog.
On the fifth round around the track, John ran past two majestic apple trees for the fifth time.  However, this time, it occurred to John that there was something strange about the two apple trees.  “Did the trees just move an inch to the right?” John thought, puzzled.  He hoped not.  As he stared stolidly at the trees, he almost thought he heard a muffled cough.  He listened intently, but a second cough never came.  Strange.  Really strange.
As John cautiously and hesitantly approached the two apple trees, a gust of wind blew.  Being overly reactive, John immediately perceived the gust of wind to be that of a hand touching his shoulder.  With a yelp of fright, he dashed straight towards his two hundred million dollar cobalt blue Porsche.  He took out the car keys from his pocket, opened the car door with desperate and shaky hands, flew into it, and drove off.

Back at the running track, a blue iPhone 5S and an Ocean Pacific wallet were spotted lying on a plastic chair, patiently waiting for their owner to retrieve them.  Unfortunately, their owner had already driven off in sheer fright and panic, abandoning them.

A Time I Persevered And Was Successful

During my Primary 6 Camp, I had the opportunity to attempt rock climbing.  I had long dreamt of climbing to the top of a rock wall, but it was easier said than done, as I soon found out.  In the beginning, I breezed past the first ten metres.  However, the higher I went, the more exhausted I began to feel.  Fatigue overtook me as I struggled to carry on.  My legs and arms ached from the stress of my body weight.  I did feel like giving up at times when the fatigue was too much to bear. Furthermore, I was afraid of heights, which made me all the more panicky to be so far away from level ground.  However, I still managed to climb up the wall, inch-by-inch, step-by-step.  My classmates down below also shouted words of encouragement and cheered me on.  After what seemed like eternity, I could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I had almost reached the top of the wall!  It was within arm’s reach as I used my last strength of energy to boost myself up.  And I did it!  I had actually managed to climb up the rock wall!  In the end, I was able to turn my long-held dream of climbing to the top of a rock wall into a reality.

Homework on Suspense - Yong E-Shean

Suspense and Anticipation
In a book by Enid Blyton, titled “The Mystery Of The Burnt Cottage”, the plot is about a group of teenagers who set out to solve the mystery of a cottage which was burnt down. The suspense comes at the part when the young detectives go on a walk and find a piece of indiscriminating evidence which points to Mr Hicks as the culprit.  However, the village policeman does not believe them.  The suspense comes at a point when the young detectives do not know who to turn to to tell about this find and leaves the reader wondering what will happen next.  The story also makes the reader concerned about what might happen because if the culprit, Mr Hicks, was allowed to go free even though he had committed the crime, this shows that the law was unjust.  This causes the reader to be concerned because most people would want the law to be fair and just towards all.

Yong E-Shean - Poetic Devices

My Poems

Rhyme
She touched her toes
With a wonderful pose
A ballet she was
Of all the best
By Yong E-Shean
Rhyme
A lonely train
Travelled in the rain
With all but vain
For it was soaked to the drain
By Yong E-Shean
Rhyme
A great ballet was she
With a pretty face had she
In a rose-coloured dress was she
Ah, how I wish she was my date
By Yong E-Shean
Rhyme
He said that it was long
But he was wrong
He said that it was strong
But it was not in the least strong
By Yong E-Shean
Alliteration
She swung the school sack on her back
And took the bumpy slow coach towards school
Swish-splash, swish-splash, her school sack went
So like the filled bottles in her sack
By Yong E-Shean
Alliteration
Sandy Susan and her sister Sandy Sue went to the seaside in their swimming costumes.  They swam and splashed and spotting several seashells on the sea bed, dived down to collect the seashells.  Swish-splash, Swish-splash they went until the seashells were all in Sandy Susan’s hands.
By Yong E-Shean
Alliteration
The Sun rose up
She spread her sun rays
Upon the small suburb below
Waking people from their sleep
By Yong E-Shean
Simile
As hungry as a giant she was
The restaurant was packed with people
She waited as patiently as a lion
But the next second she was roaring like a drill
How people stared at her
With eyes as big as footballs
And sheer terror running through their minds
How they scuttled
As fast as blowing wind
And at last she got a seat
Served by a timid waiter
By Yong E-Shean
Hyperbole
I slipped and fell off the mountain
I plunge down at the speed of light
I scream so loudly that all the birds flying in the sky drop dead
I land with a thud so hard and loud that I cause a mini Earthquake
And the thud can be heard from the opposite side of the world
By Yong E-Shean
Personification
The poor table tried to stay still
While the child used him
The child kicked the table and he winced in pain
The child placed her heavy school bag on him
And he strained to carry the weight
He thought it would soon be over but he was wrong
The child was staying back in the classroom
And so he would have to wait
When everyone had finally left
He sighed in relief and stretched his legs
“Ah, what a poor life I have”
He thought as he prepared himself for the next day of school
By Yong E-Shean
Symbolism
I was two when lightning struck
So electrifying and strong was the lightning
That I completely failed to pick myself up
So devastating was the lightning that it left me in pain
For the rest of my unfortunate and miserable life
By Yong E-Shean
Symbolism
The roses bloomed after the dark days ended
The time for a new beginning
Where new friendships are forged
And dark pasts are forgotten
By Yong E-Shean
Metaphor
A snake she was
So cunning and deceiving
One second a sweet girl
The next a hairy beast
By Yong E-Shean
Metaphor
A bolster he was
Full of warmth and care
Filled with sunshine and roses
Which spread like sun rays
By Yong E-Shean
Imagery
So crystal clear the sea was
So that you could see the corals
And the beautiful shoals of fish in the water
So pure the water was
So that you could see dolphins swimming here and there
Just beneath your feet
Ah, how mesmerizing the sea is
By Yong E-Shean
Free verse
I stand in the MRT
Waiting to reach my stop
I can’t wait for school
Because my friends are there
And of course there are also
The extra humourous teachers
By Yong E-Shean
Allusion
They are like Pooh and Piglet
The best of friends
Together through thick and thin
Always there for one another
How I wish I had such a friend
By Yong E-Shean
Rhythm
The school bell goes
Bong! Bong! Bong!
The students go
Scatter! Scatter! Scatter!
To their seats
As the teachers go
Click! Clack! Click! Clack!
To the classrooms
Where the students are waiting for them
By Yong E-Shean
Onomatopoeia
Dum! Dum! Diddy Dum!
Went the drums
Clang! Clang! Clang Clang Clang!
Went the cymbals
Squeak! Squeak! Squ-e-a-k!
Went the violins
Ah, what nice music
No wonder people are rushing
To the site of the performance
