Poetic Devices

Rhymes

The sun, the moon and the stars
The moon is the world's security guard

but he only works at night

the stars are like his employees

making sure everything goes right

the sun is like the boss first to work, last to go

but where he goes when he gets off the world will never know

Alliteration
         Soft

smooth snowfalls

silently from the sky.

The snow is so silvery and small.

Slowly you slip and slide

 on the snow

Onomatopoeia

When The Lights Go OutThe door went creak

In the still of the night

The floor went bump

Oh what a fright

All of a sudden, we heard a chime

The grandfather clock

was keeping good time

We turned down a hallway and heard a loud crash

It seems that someone had dropped all the trash

So many sounds when the lights go out

It’s enough to make you scream and shout!

Simile
Rainbow

Struggles and success,
 Sufferings and happiness,
Dreams and Goals building to life;
Like colours of the rainbow making light.

Metaphor

Hope
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune–without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
“I’ve heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.”
–Emily Dickinson
Hyperbole

My Love

My love is a box
That is deep as the ocean.
My heart is a crater
Waiting to be filled.
My stomach,
Impatiently waiting for your response,
Is a group  of drunken butterflies
Struggling to take flight.
What will you tell me?
Are you - my love?
Personification

Dinnertime Chorus

The teapot sang as the water boiled
The ice cubes cackled in their glass
the teacups chattered to one another.
While the chairs were passing gas
The gravy gurgled merrily
As the oil danced in a pan.
Oh my dinnertime chorus
What a lovely, lovely clan!

Symbolism

Cinquain Fourteen

Lost
under pile
of red tape
hoping I will
 be found

Free Verse

Barely tolerated, living on the margin
In our technological society, we were always having to be rescued
On the brink of destruction, like heroines in Orlando Furioso
Before it was time to start all over again.
There would be thunder in the bushes, a rustling of coils,…….
The whole thing might not, in the end, be the only solution……..
Came plowing down the course, just to make sure everything was O.K.…
About how to receive this latest piece of information.

Imagery
On a starry winter night in Portugal
Where the ocean kissed the southern shore
There a dream I never thought would come to pass
Came and went like time spent through an hourglass
-Teena Marie, “Portuguese Love”
Allusion

Christy didn't like to spend money.
She was no Scrooge,
but she seldom purchased anything except the bare necessities
-Charles Dicken,Christmas carol

Rhythm

From:
Because I Could Not Stop For Death, by Emily Dickinson

Because I could not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.

Poetic Devices

Rhyme: Time to Rise
A birdie with a yellow bill
Hopped upon the window-sill
Cocked his shining eye and said:
"Ain't you shamed you sleepy-head?"
- by Robert Louis Stevenson

Alliteration: Tigers
Tim the terrifying tiger
Tiptoes through tangled trees
His twitching tail thumping
His terrible teeth terrifying turtles
Who tumble away

Onomatopoeia: In the Kitchen
The taps go plip, plop!
The saucepan goes stir, slop!
The knives and forks go rattle, clatter!
The baby goes pitter, patter!
The phone goes ring, ting!
The microwave goes beep, ting!

Simile: The Garden
In spring, the garden wakes
From its long-lasting sleep;
In summer all the veggies come
With their colours so deep
In fall the garden is
A great, leaf-covered floor;
In winter, like a bed of snow
That will awake no more

Metaphor: A Friend
A friend is a golden stone
A friend is a nice cold ice block on a hot day
A friend is powerful and strong
A friend is a nice song
A friend is a strong rope
A friend sticks with you thick and thin

Hyperbole: The Dirtiest Man In The World
Oh, I'm Dirty Dan, the world's dirtiest man
I never have taken a shower
I can't see my shirt - it's so covered with dirt
And my ears have enough to grow flowers

Personification: April Rain Song
Let the rain kiss you
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops
Let the rain sing you a lullaby
The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk
The rain makes running pools in the gutter
The rain plays a little sleep song on our roof at night
And I love the rain
- by Langston Hughes

Symbolism: Thanksgiving
A mountain of baby carrots
A turkey the size of a cow
A river full of gravy
A dog that says meow
Every pie known to man
And gallons full of ice cream
By the time my dinner is over
I surely won't be lean

Imagery: Preludes
The winter evening settles down
With smell of steaks in passageways
Six o' clock
The burnt-out ends of smoky days
And now a gusty shower wraps
The grimy scraps
Of withered leaves above your feet
And newspapers from vacant lots;
The showers beat
On broken blinds and chimney-pots
And at the corner of the street
A lonely cab-horse steams and stamps
And then the lighting of the lamps
- by T.S Eliot

Free Verse: Feelings, Now
Some kind of attraction that is neither
Animal, vegetable, nor mineral, a power not
Solar, fusion, or magnetic
And it is all in my head that
I could see into his
And find myself sitting there
- by Katherine Foreman

Allusion:
The evening grosbeak on the lawn
Will turn his back on us, move on
With his wide family and those friends
We thought were ours. That's how it ends.
If it's been good, be glad it's been;
It won't be. The cold shoulder's in.
We must make do, once summer's done,
With our faith weather friends or none

Rhythm:
Raps that advertise
Poems that celebrate
Words that catch your eyes
Sounds that captivate

Alliteration
The Sun rose up
She spread her sun rays
Upon the small suburb below
Waking people from their sleep
By Yong E-Shean
Simile
As hungry as a giant she was
The restaurant was packed with people
She waited as patiently as a lion
But the next second she was roaring like a drill
How people stared at her
With eyes as big as footballs
And sheer terror running through their minds
How they scuttled
As fast as blowing wind
And at last she got a seat
Served by a timid waiter
By Yong E-Shean
Hyperbole
I slipped and fell off the mountain
I plunge down at the speed of light
I scream so loudly that all the birds flying in the sky drop dead
I land with a thud so hard and loud that I cause a mini Earthquake
And the thud can be heard from the opposite side of the world
By Yong E-Shean
Personification
The poor table tried to stay still
While the child used him
The child kicked the table and he winced in pain
The child placed her heavy school bag on him
And he strained to carry the weight
He thought it would soon be over but he was wrong
The child was staying back in the classroom
And so he would have to wait
When everyone had finally left
He sighed in relief and stretched his legs
“Ah, what a poor life I have”
He thought as he prepared himself for the next day of school
By Yong E-Shean
Symbolism

So electrifying and strong was the lightning
That I completely failed to pick myself up

The time for a new beginning

Imagery
So crystal clear the sea was
So that you could see the corals
And the beautiful shoals of fish in the water
So pure the water was
So that you could see dolphins swimming here and there
Just beneath your feet
Ah, how mesmerizing the sea is
By Yong E-Shean

Waiting to reach my stop

Bong! Bong! Bong!
The students go
Scatter! Scatter! Scatter!

Click! Clack! Click! Clack!
To the classrooms

Poetic Devices

Rhyme
The Life Of A Cupcake
They put me in the oven to bake.
Me a deprived and miserable cake.
Feeling the heat I started to bubble.
Watching the others I knew I was in trouble

Alliteration
Slippery Sloppery
A slippery sloppery slipping snail
Slithered slimed and slid on the floor
Feeling hurried harried hungry and helpless
As starlings screeched spiraled and saw
That slippery sloppery slipping snail
Who slithered slimed and slid on the floor
A fluttering of feathers fell frighteningly fast
Meant that slippery sloppery slipping snail
Who slithered slimed and slid was no more.

Onomatopoeia
The Precocious Teapot
The teapot whistled at the lovely young pot
She came to a boil at this unfortunate shot
When the pan saw what happened, he began to sizzle
The pot was his cousin and it made him grizzle
The faucet joined in with a whoosh of its water
It seems that the pot was his only daughter
The teapot was humbled and expressed his regret
It was an unfortunate gaffe he’d rather forget

Simile
Chocolate Cake

Friends are like chocolate cake
You can never have too many.
Chocolate cake is like heaven -
Always amazing you with each taste or feeling.
Chocolate cake is like life with so many different pieces.
Chocolate cake is like happiness, you can never get enough of it.

Hyperbole
Summertime is Here
My tongue is a piece of sandpaper
I’m dissolving into a puddle
I want to dive into a snowdrift
Though I’m sure that would befuddle
Open me up, my organs are cooked
I think I’m now well done
You can fry an egg upon my brow
As I melt away in the sun!

Personification
Snow Flake
A fragile winter butterfly
Flutters from the sky
So soft and yet her heart
Is cold and made of ice
But if I warm it
She will melt and die

Symbolism
A light exists in Spring By Emily Dickinson
A light exists in Spring
Not present on the year
At any other period—
When March is scarcely here

Metaphor
The Rose
The sun went away
The sky went black
Up came the wind
I fell on my back

It started to rain
I began to sink
Then I lifted my head
And took a drink

I perked myself up
And said "please don't cry"
And wiped off my petals
Until they were dry

The clouds soon parted
And out came the sun
The beauty in me
Has only begun

Free Verse
Disappointments by Vivian Gilbert Zabel
Every life has a room
where memories are stored:
A box of special occasions here,
Shelves of shared laughter there.
But back in the shadows
Lurks a trunk locked tight,
Not to be opened and searched.
There hide disappointments
Which darken every heart

Imagery
The Shark
His body was tubular
And tapered
And smoke-blue,
And as he passed the wharf
He turned,
And snapped at a flat-fish
That was dead and floating.
And I saw the flash of a white throat,
And a double row of white teeth,
And eyes of metallic grey,
Hard and narrow and slit.
Then out of the harbour,
With that three-cornered fin
Shearing without a bubble the water
Lithely,
Leisurely,
He swam—That strange fish,
Tubular, tapered, smoke-blue,
Part vulture, part wolf,
Part neither—for his blood was cold

Allusion
Flames
If sorrow cloaks the surface of your soul
And chills the warmth that turns your wishes cold,
Unchain the hidden anguish in your hold,
Releasing tethered truths that must be told
